Built in 1916, the masonry structure @ St. Philp + Warren played a pivotal role in Charleston history (as a thriving hardware business until the 80s) and in the Westendorff family as well (one of the current owners lived there and recalls good times playing on the roof as a child).  Long-dormant, the building has undergone a massive restoration & now houses a residence, a restaurant and a banquet space.

Currently a parking lot, the corner of Gadsden and Bennett will soon house six contemporary residences.  A contemporary aesthetic was applied to historic ‘row house’ precedents, and considerations of flood zone requirements + context were carefully balanced with a focus on efficient and comfortable current-day living.  (Dow Construction, contractor)

With a rare opportunity to build a new house in such an established neighborhood, our client had a spare but strong concept in mind:  ‘swoop’ (send driveway around to the back) and ‘pool on the roof’.  The ensuing design came about through careful study of precedents and possibilities, as well as coordination with neighborhood and City representatives.
